Fears and Phobias

Picture of the eagle Approximately 10% of people will develop a specific phobia sometime in their lives. Phobias are characterized by the excessive fear of a specific object or situation that may lead to severe distress and, in some cases, panic attacks. Among the most common phobias are fears of: animals, such as dogs, snakes, or insects. Situations, such as flying, small enclosed spaces, or driving. Things in nature, such as storms, water, or heights. Other things, including fears of vomiting, doctors, dentists, or choking. In fact people can develop a phobia about just about anything. Individuals with specific phobias recognize that their fear is unreasonable; however, they cannot overcome it. While most people feel anxious or apprehensive about certain objects or situations, individuals with a specific phobia have their daily routines, employment, or social lives disrupted by their fears.

Both Hypnotherapy and EFT are excellent therapys for curing phobias. Both can incorporate techniques borrowed from NLP, making them extremely effective. Neither method takes away the rational fears that we all have for our own protection, say for e.g. if I were to cure you of your fear of heights, you aren't going to then jump off a building! They simply take away the excess emotional charge associated with the situation or event. In fact they work much the same with with fears and phobias as they do with trauma, or excess grief. By ridding the person of their excess reaction to an event or situation, we can then reframe the way they think about said event or situation.

Working with fears, phobias and trauma is in it's own way some of the most rewarding work in this field, as such a huge difference can be made to a persons life in a single session.

In the case of phobias and fears most often one session is enough to achieve a result, however as with all things, this is not always the case. In cases of severe trauma it can take a number of sessions to achieve the desired result, that said notably less than with other forms of therapy.
